Smarter Roads is transforming Melbourne’s arterial road network to improve journey reliability, help reduce delays and better manage congestion in response to increasing traffic volumes.
Drawing on learnings from interstate and abroad, the Victorian Government program delivers innovative technology and more specialist personnel to achieve smoother and more predictable travel on our main roads.
We’ve installed more than 1,000 new traffic monitoring cameras as well as wireless travel time sensors, vehicle detectors, real-time travel signs and dynamic pedestrian crossings.
Increased visibility across the network means we can see incidents and disruptions sooner and respond faster to get traffic moving again.
Our incident response has been boosted through more on-road officers and an expanded fleet of customised incident response vehicles.
We’re also fast tracking the review and optimisation of more than 3,000 traffic signals on all main roads across 28 local councils to reduce stop/start travel and share ‘green’ time more efficiently between all road users.
We're improving our traffic light network to provide smoother and more predictable journeys with less stop-start travel.
We’re keeping traffic moving by adding extra staff to monitor roads and clear disruptions more quickly.
We’re rolling out the latest technology to give us even greater visibility of the road network.
We’re providing more reliable real-time travel information on the road.
We've rolled out transport technology assets on busy main roads in Melbourne’s west, east and south-east.
